A start up can be defined as a young company in a bid to develop a product or a service.

What is step one of starting a business?
Write a business plan right? Wrong.

Well that is what I want to discuss today. In 2020 is it worthwhile for a business to create a business plan?

I am not saying a business plan does not have merit, as it is intended to be your “roadmap to success” but with an estimated 90% of start-ups failing, maybe it is about time to do away with the traditional business plan.

More than 100 million downloads in September alone with 1.5 million concurrent player, Among us has quickly become a gaming phenomenon. Although the game was released in 2018, it has only attracted rapid popularity recently with unpredictable organic growth. Neobanks vs traditional banking branches

What is a neobank?
A neobank (also known as an online bank, internet-only bank, or digital bank) is a type of direct bank that operates exclusively online without traditional physical branch networks.

It is the latest technological advancement which places an emphasis on the technology and removal of traditional means. A neobank is what Amazon was to the high-street, what Uber is to the local taxi ranks.

In the UK we have Monzo, Starling Bank and Revolut to name a few of the latest Fintech neobanks.

The Toxic World of Self Help: Hustle Culture, Toxic Positivity, Addiction, and Fake Gurus

According to some studies the the self-improvement industry is estimated to Grow to $13.2 billion by 2022. The fact that it is an industry in itself is slightly unsettling given the nature of profiting from vulnerable people.

Having said this, I am an avid consumer of ‘self-improvement’ content online and much can be said about the benefits of some of the information out there, but for this blog I want to delve in to some the negatives of what hustle culture can bring.

Here is where it can get complicated, you get hooked by every last word of a self-help book. The satisfaction of finishing the book, convincing you that you have a greater sense of self, being and understanding of what it takes to become successful/happy. …

My experience of University as an undergraduate in tech

After recently graduating a Software Engineer degree at Queen’s University Belfast, I wanted to give a bit of an overview to not only myself but to others looking to pursue a career in Technology. To give a bit of context, I spent 4 years at University with a year in industry during my third year. As well as this I also completed a three-month internship in a Technology company in India over this time.

It should also be said that these are my opinions and many others may have a different University experience.

Software Engineering Degree

Year 1 & 2 Fundamentals
For me personally, University provided a great foundation for the basics of programming, networks, databases and taught some core skills such as team-work, problem-solving and communication. I entered University with little programming experience from school having worked mainly with databases. first-year provided a foundation of knowledge whilst second-year further built-on that allowing for more advanced topics to be taught in those significant areas. This allowed for consolidation on what areas of Technology I was best interested in before-entering placement year. The first two-years did in fact provide crucial information to which I use regularly in my day-to-day life as a Software Engineer. …

Corona Virus & Technology

Healthcare and technology have always had a great relationship from diagnostic tools to electronic records of patient’s data stored in a database. This relationship has never been tested as much over the course of 2020 with the corona virus pandemic which put the world in to lockdown.

I take a look at Technology’s impact on the global pandemic on how integral it was to battling the virus.

Monitoring, Surveillance, detection, and prevention
The internet of things enabled people to communicate with each other and to access online data and processes. Over the course of the pandemic IOT allowed public health organisations to monitor a real-time update on the actual number of people who have covid-19. …

TikTok’s rise to the social media summit is nothing short of sensational, having been dominated by Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter for years. The short-form video app has become one of the most popular social platforms among Generation Z.

TikTok has changed the social media game ever since it started trending with 1.5 billion users worldwide, it is one of the fastest-growing social media applications. It originally started with the name but then was soon changed to TikTok after an acquisition by a Chinese tech giant ByteDance.

But after many unsuccessful social media apps have found such as Vine, MySpace and dare I say it Google plus has found. There isn’t much room at the top to play with the big boys. So how did TikTok carve open some space in the congested social media industry. …

With the ever increasing demand for voice technology and voice assistants. Alexa has one of the highest adoption rates in history with an estimated 100 million devices sold worldwide. This large and growing number of devices creates a massive demand for a new type of app: the voice app or Skill.

More specifically I wanted to explore the financial side of developing Alexa apps or ‘skills’. Is it worthwhile for developers to pursue app development with Alexa?

What is an Alexa App/Skill?
You can enable and disable skills, using the Alexa app or a web browser, in the same way that you install and uninstall apps on your smart phone or tablet. Skills utilize Alexa’s voice commands. …

Using Spotify as an example

So after recently doing some development using Alexa skills, I have realized account linking isn’t so easy and can be difficult depending on what API you intend to link to. So here is a quick tutorial on how to link an account to an Alexa skill using Spotify as an example.

The bias in our AI systems affecting our decision making

Artificial Intelligence systems are becoming more integrated into every system which is being involved in critical industries such as criminal justice, law enforcement, hiring and financial lending.

This places high importance about the quality of decision making from these new systems. Therefore an interesting discussion is the amount of bias within Technology, can we control it and how great an impact can it have?

How does it happen?
To have a better understanding of this bias. AI systems are typically trained on large sets of data. Therefore AI systems are only as good as the data we put into them. Bad data can contain implicit racial, gender, or ideological biases. …
